I built this website from the ground up, loosely inspired by counterculture corners of the internet like The Yesterweb, The Indie Web, and the tildeverse. Under the hood, there are no bloated JavaScript frameworks—just a custom Python static site generator, Jinja2 templates, and a SQLite database, all served up via Caddy on an OpenBSD box. This will remain a solo project for me to document the things I build, analyze, and break as I explore the technologies shaping the digital world:
Beyond the technical writeups, this site serves as an archive for digital autonomy. On the links page, you'll finda host of information decentralized and free, open source replacements for popular technologies to better align your internet/technology usage with your personal goals and values, as well as a treasure trove of information about me if you think I'm cool or whatever. Not like I even care one bit 😑
If you resonate with any of my messaging, feel free to fill out my contact form, or send an email to bug@thebugreport.dev. I encourage you to organize your own community around shared principles if you are able and eager to do so. If you want to build your own website based on the values, aesthetics, or hobbyist nature of the peripheral or personal web, check out the guides at 32bit.cafe.
If you want to speak your mind safely and without censorship, learn how to host decentralized, anonymized, and secure websites. AI has been incredibly capable for many years at this point. If you are not technically skilled, Gemini, ChatGPT, Deepseek, etc. can help you do this in a few weeks with the right prompt and sufficient context, or a few days if you know what you're doing, although expect to take much longer if you want something polished and large in scope. It's not a small undertaking, but the benefits include reducing reliance on products that know everything about you and speaking your mind without fear of censorship. It's worth the time investment if you ask me. Check out these resources as well.
Webrings are helpful for content discovery without a privacy-invading algorithm. You may find that this content is of a higher quality than social media recommendation algorithms that create a feedback loop of anger, fear, and other negative emotion. You may find that this content exposes you to more useful/relevant information that wouldn't necessarily get past your social media bubble. Beware of Q-Anon level conspiracy, you're bound to find it in this corner of the personal web. Join a webring.
